HURRICANE HELENE| FLORIDA

GENERAL INFORMATION
Disaster zones are hazardous areas, and we need everyone to be on the same page so we can operate safely as a unified team.
  • All volunteers on this trip are 12 years old and in good health. The work we are doing is hard work in varying hot, weather conditions.
  • The final cost of this service trip with us is $400 per person (covers airfare, ground/rental transportation, some food, travel insurance.)
  • Some food is your responsibility. We recommend planning $20-25 a day for food while you are in Florida.
  • The trip cost is due Sunday, October 13, 2024. (Make checks payable to Souls Church)
  • Each day we will plan to work 9 hours (8am-5pm) minimum commitment, unless needs on the ground change.
  • Work loads each day will be based on what the people coming are able to do so we can plan our work teams and which jobs each day accordingly.

TRAVEL & LOCATION INFORMATION
  • At this time, we are working in Pine Island in Southwest Florida
  • We will be flying Sun Country Airlines (MSP Terminal 2) into Fort Myers, Florida (RSW).
  • We will be staying at a residnence home of Cape Coral, FL.

GENERAL TEAM SCHEDULE
  • Sun, Oct 20: Travel Day (2:34pm flight, arrive 6:48pm)
  • Mon, Oct 21 - Wed, Oct 23: Work Days
  • Thurs, Oct 24: Travel (6:45pm, arrive home 9:20pm)

Detailed Trip Schedule

Sun, Oct 20, 2024 – Travel Day
  • Come to church and wear your “Serve Day” t-shirt
  • 1pm – Team arrives at MSP Terminal 2 – meet by Sun Country Airlines
  • 2:34pm – Flight from MSP to Ft Myers airport 
  • 6:30pm – Team arrives in Ft Myers, FL
  • Team will stop for dinner along the way to location (fast food)

Mon, Oct 21, 2024 – Wed, Oct 23, 2024 – Serve Days
  • 7:00am - Breakfast and devo as a team
  • 8:30am - 5pm – Serve
  • 6:00pm – Dinner and clean up, Rest

Thurs, Oct  24, 2024 – Serve Day/Travel Home
  • 7:00am -Breakfast and devo as a team
  • 8:00am - Team Serves
  • 5:00pm – Return Rental Vehicle
  • 6:45pm – Flight from Fort Myers, FL to MSP 
  • 9:20pm – Arrive MSP

Team Member Expectations

As a member of this Missions Serve Team, we ask that you commit to actively participate in and support the whole team to accomplish the goals of our particular project. Please recognize that by being a part of this team I am agreeing to the following:

Standard of Team Excellence:
a. Have a regular time of Bible study and prayer
b. Arrive early to all events during the trip
c. Never complain
d. Always be looking for opportunities to serve
e. Have a spirit of flexibility and "can do" attitude assuming that plans often change.

Team Mindset:
a. Make it a priority to attend the team meetings and be an active participant in all team and project activities
b. Submit to the authority of the team leader and respect the decisions they make
c. Honor & respect church leadership that we serve on the grounds of this trip

Team Attitude:
Please remember to be respectful to Hurricane Survivors as you serve. They have experienced great loss. They appreciate your help, and that you have given time to help them. Your smile and loving attitude will help them through this difficult time.

Team Packing List

Each team member will be bringing a backpack or duffel bag for travel:

  • Photo ID (Drivers License, Passport)
  • Birth Certificate (for minors traveling)
  • Notarized Release Form (for minors traveling)

Note: You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag that are 3.4 ounces and through the checkpoint. 

Team Job Assignments

When on a missions trip there are three groups that we minister to:
  1. Contacts (those that are hosting us)
 2. Locals (those we are serving that live there)
 3. Each other (those on this team)

#1 – Home Repair and Construction
We have work scheduled for us with John & Jody Link and others in the community.  Both will involve disaster related work  for families that lost their homes and need help in the community.

#2 - Offering Spiritual & Prayer Support
We may have opportunities to pray for people upon serving them.

About Pastor Jim Olson

We will be serving under Pastor Jim Olson, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Pine Island! Pastor Jim has his Bachelor's Degree in Pastoral Studies and his Master of Divinity from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.  Jim is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Ministry Degree from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana.  He has been in full time ministry for the last 18 years, serving at FBCOPI for the last 9, and Christ Community Evangelical Free Church in New Albin, Iowa for the 9 years prior.

Family is extremely important to Pastor Jim.  He and his wife, Cristen, were high school sweethearts, and have been married for over 29 years.  God has done amazing things in their lives including blessing them with their children, Emma and Trentonn.  Both of them are currently high school students, and seeking after God with their lives.  His wife, Cristen serves as the Church Secretary and Bookkeeper.  She also ministers to the youth in Sunday School and High School Youth Group.
